Tips for a great Business Portrait… From a Carrollton, Texas Professional Photographer

It’s just a headshot? What’s the big deal?

Business Portraits seem like something you take really quickly and toss up on your webpage and/or social media pages. So why is a business portrait so important? Can’t you just take a selfie? It’s quick and you can do it at home, or in your car. Well… you can, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

A business portrait is often times a person’s first impression of you.  I don’t know about you, but if I see a portrait that either looks like the person didn’t even take the time to brush their hair, or is wearing something from the 1990’s; I may not choose to do business with them.  That may sound silly, but if you don’t look professional, then I am going to assume that you aren’t professional. That first impression may be far from the truth. In reality, that person may just not like to have their picture taken.  Well, I don’t either, but to prove to you that it doesn’t hurt, I’m going to use myself as an example. AND… I’ll give you some do’s and don’ts along the way

Lisa Snow Feb2015croppedbwThis one is a true selfie.  It was snowing and I was out playing in it;  and that is exactly what it looks like.  I would not use this to represent me in a business situation.  But, I’m a photographer and I like to play in the snow.

IMG_9775bwThis one is very nice.  The lightening is even and I’m wearing nice clothes.  I look approachable and friendly.  If I hadn’t met myself, I would think I’m a well organized and put together person.  I would do business with me.

Lisa_7512This one has a few problems.  I’m actually showing off my new haircut. But I wouldn’t recommend wearing such a busy shirt and I definitely would not suggest letting your hair hang in your face.

LisaLeaning_8766cropped I actually love this portrait.  I think I look very friendly and fun. This portrait is more casual and would work best for either social media or a more casual industry.

webLisa Manis_6334This portrait is a good example of a good strong portrait.  My clothing is professional and in a dark neutral color. It is conservative, my arms are covered, and I’m positioned a little more directly at the camera. This is a more assertive/leader pose.  It shows that I mean business, but the smile on my face still shows that i’m approachable.  I would never want to look mean unless maybe that’s the kind of industry I worked in.

Manis_8076aThis is also a great example.  My clothes are professional, conservative, my hair is nice and neat and the lighting on my face is even. I would definitely do business with me if I saw this.  And of course I think you should too.  Give me a call, I’d love to take your next business portrait.
