As “they” say… out with the old, in with the new!

Who are “they” anyway? This time of year for senior photographers, we are saying goodbye to our 2018 Seniors and welcoming our 2019 seniors. It’s one of those bittersweet moments in my industry. I have watched my 2018 seniors grow from excited but nervous Juniors into these confident young men and women. I’m so proud of the young adults they are all becoming. As they head into their last week of high school,  many emotions begin to surface. One HUGE emotion, seniors often refer to as “senioritis” but parents would more affectionately call it “attitude”is often at the forefront.  Even the most well adjusted seniors experience senioritis to some degree.

A word to parents with graduating seniors… this last week of school might bring out the “attitude” in your precious teenager, but keep in mind, that you were once a senior. If you can look past the shortness of temper and the lack of motivation for school work and chores and anything else that would be classified as productive… you might notice an excited yet nervous child.  We expect these kids to be grown ups by the time they graduate from high school, but really they are thrown into a huge world of decision making and independence.  This world is scary.  And although they think they are ready, and they probably are, there is still fear of the unknown.  Be a little forgiving and compassionate during this transition time. After all, we DO want them to come home to visit.

A word to seniors about your parents… Although you are REALLY excited to be graduating, keep in mind that your parents may feel like time has passed them by.  Parents have SO much to teach you before you take off on your own, their heads are spinning wondering how you were in Kindergarten yesterday and are graduating today! I’m serious when I say, you WILL understand their point of view when you have kids of your own.  But until then, please  be patient with them.  They have been and are still your biggest supporter. They have been here for you since birth and they will continue to be here for you as you shove off into the big world ahead of you. I challenge you to take a few minutes of each day this week to thank your parents for something they have done for you and to tell them you love them. You might be surprised how just these two little/huge things will change your life.

I know I am JUST your senior photographer, but I’m SO proud of ALL of my 2018 seniors!!! Go out into this HUGE world and make a difference.  My generation is counting on you! And… please stay in touch.

Lead by Example

Working with High School Seniors opens a lot of opportunities for helping and encouraging our next generation.  With social media and up to date news at our fingertips, our teens and kids are overwhelmed with information and opinions that may or may not be constructive. Our teens and kids are sometimes held to unrealistic expectations by social media. This is just our new normal.  We as adults have to rally together to pitch in where we can to help them sort out what is real and important and what is just fluff.

I find a true calling to help these teens see the beauty within themselves.  But, also as a trusted adult in their community, I strive to lead by example.  I run into my seniors and teen clients all over town. Sometimes, I pass them on the streets in our cars, or at a store while they are working their first job or at school functions. Where ever we are, I want them to see me leading by example.  They will never see me texting and driving, or checking email or text messages while having a face to face conversation with someone or sharing negative gossip. Sometimes it’s what you AREN’T doing that speaks the loudest and makes the biggest impact. If these teens see us adults treating others with respect, they will join in.  Remember the “golden rule” we were taught in preschool?

Let’s all do our part to help this next generation thrive.  They are our future! And our future looks bright.

That was fun

Why is Summer the best time to schedule my 2018 Senior Portrait session?

Oh, there are SO many reasons to schedule your senior portrait session during the summer. For one, YOU ARE FINALLY A SENIOR!!!  You are super excited right now to begin your senior year.

Summer is also the time when you don’t have any stress and you have a great tan! Once school starts you will be bogged down with homework, SAT prep and testing, college visits, Practice for Band, cheer, football, drill team and other Fall sports. And starting at the end of October, it will be dark outside by 5:00. So, that cuts out 5 days out of the week that you won’t be available. And… I’m pretty sure you teenagers like to have dates and social time on the weekends.

So, Grab your calendars and either give us a call or fill out the form at the end of this post.  We will set a date for your portrait session and then you can start shopping for outfits!  See you soon.

Live in the Moment

Summer is fast and furious for me… a senior, wedding and family photographer.  Some might call me “just a photographer” but it’s not like that… not at all.  My seniors, brides, and families invite me into their personal lives to share their very important life milestones.

If I was “just a photographer” then I wouldn’t get this lump in my throat as a dad walks his daughter down the aisle to hand her future over to a young man that can’t possibly love her as much as he does…

…or when I see endless tweets of last season’s high school seniors packing their cars to head off to college. Who is going to feed them, protect them, love them?

Live_In_The_Moment_Blog 4 Being a mother and daughter myself, I can feel both sides of the fence.  I remember how excited I was to marry the love of my life. But, I remember my dad asking me if I was sure I was ready.

I also remember packing my car and heading off to college.  I was SO excited.  But, I also remember my parents driving off without me.

The funny thing is that we all know it’s coming.  At the start of our senior year, or the beginning of your engagement, we know where we are headed.  If we prepare properly, then we are ready.  It’s the way life goes. Ready or not, it’s time.

As summer is winding down, I continue to share these life milestones with my families. I’m technically “just your photographer” but, really I feel more like part of your family.

So, from the family member who is on the outside looking in, my advice to each one of my 2016 seniors, parents of 2016 seniors, brides, grooms, parents of my bride and grooms, and now my 2017 seniors and their parents…
