What Should We Wear For Our Family Portrait?

I get asked all the time “what should we wear for our family portrait?” Well, this is a great time to discuss this since family portrait season is FAST APPROACHING!! What am I saying? Family portrait season IS HERE!!

A great family portrait begins with a great family portrait session.  And the way to achieve that, is to start planning RIGHT NOW! So, before you go any further, give us a call and get on our calendar for either our Portrait in the Park Event or our Home for the Holiday Event.  Details for both of these events are on our website.

Now, let’s talk about clothing.  First, think about where you plan to hang your portrait. Will it be in your relaxed family or game room? Or will it be in a more formal room? That will help us set the style.  Going formal or casual in your dress, will depend on where the portraits will hang and what style you prefer.  After that, choose a color pallet that will go with, or compliment that room.

Now, let’s say you have no idea where your portraits will hang.  No problem!  Just choose colors that look good on your family and will stand the test of time.

To start, you might have a great dress or shirt that you LOVE and want to wear for the portrait. Great, let’s call this our inspiration piece.  An inspiration piece will give you a place to start.  Pull out a couple of colors from your inspiration piece and have everyone wear those colors.

Let’s say you LOVE blue. Everyone can wear jeans and a different shade of blue for their top.  Or have the grown ups wear similar dark blue tops and the kids wear different shades of blue.  Don’t be afraid of prints or to add a third color to your pallet.  Be creative and add a little bit of your personality to spice things up.

I hope this is some good information.  If you still need help, give me a call.  That’s what I’m here for.  I have included some samples below of some families who nailed it!  You can also check out our website for some other examples.

Don’t delay, send us a note below and we will contact you about scheduling your 2018 family portrait. Talk to you soon,  Lisa

Senior, Family, Business and Event Photographer in Carrollton

I have been told over and over by industry leaders that in order for a Photography business to survive, I have to specialize in one type of photography.  Can you even imagine doing the same thing over and over, year after year?  NO! I can’t either.  No wonder some photographers experience burn out and just decide to quit.  I LOVE being a photographer.  I’m certainly not a rebel, or even a very opinionated type of person.  However, I do know what I like and what I want and have resisted the urge to listen to advice that just didn’t seem to fit my personality or my goals for my business.

In January of next year, 2019, Texas Tradition Photography will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary!  And I can tell you with the most certainty that I specialize in photographing people. I specialize in High School Seniors Photography, studio and location Family Portraits, Business Portraits and Personal Branding, and of course special events like Wedding Photography and Dance Schools and life’s milestones.

So, as I gear up to celebrate this amazing milestone in my business and my life (I am also turning 50 in 2019), I find myself happy exactly where I am.

What are you waiting for? It’s time to schedule your 2017 family portrait session with Carrollton’s favorite photographer!

Seriously, don’t wait. Now is the time to schedule your 2017 family portrait session. Your family deserves this. Your family has busy schedules all year. You look forward to the holidays to celebrate with the ones you love the most. That’s your family!! So, let’s create some beautiful portraits that will celebrate your family ALL year… and every year after that. A wall portrait is the one gift that keeps giving, year after year.

Live in the Moment

Summer is fast and furious for me… a senior, wedding and family photographer.  Some might call me “just a photographer” but it’s not like that… not at all.  My seniors, brides, and families invite me into their personal lives to share their very important life milestones.

If I was “just a photographer” then I wouldn’t get this lump in my throat as a dad walks his daughter down the aisle to hand her future over to a young man that can’t possibly love her as much as he does…

…or when I see endless tweets of last season’s high school seniors packing their cars to head off to college. Who is going to feed them, protect them, love them?

Live_In_The_Moment_Blog 4 Being a mother and daughter myself, I can feel both sides of the fence.  I remember how excited I was to marry the love of my life. But, I remember my dad asking me if I was sure I was ready.

I also remember packing my car and heading off to college.  I was SO excited.  But, I also remember my parents driving off without me.

The funny thing is that we all know it’s coming.  At the start of our senior year, or the beginning of your engagement, we know where we are headed.  If we prepare properly, then we are ready.  It’s the way life goes. Ready or not, it’s time.

As summer is winding down, I continue to share these life milestones with my families. I’m technically “just your photographer” but, really I feel more like part of your family.

So, from the family member who is on the outside looking in, my advice to each one of my 2016 seniors, parents of 2016 seniors, brides, grooms, parents of my bride and grooms, and now my 2017 seniors and their parents…

Live in the moment! Take it all in and enjoy every second with your loved ones.  We are exactly where we are supposed to be.  Thank you for including me in your family!

Do you know someone who needs a professional photographer? We’d love to be part of your family too.

Wall Portrait Clusters- A Carrollton Professional Family Photographer’s Suggestion for Beautiful Wall Art

What do we LOVE this holiday season? Texas Tradition Photography Wall Portrait Clusters! Several wall portraits designed to hang together creates a Wall Portrait Cluster. A cluster is a fun and modern way to decorate your home.

Here’s a peek at some of our favorite clusters:

Portrait ClusterThe Arcemont girls always look fantastic in their portraits! We designed their wall portrait cluster using an 8×10 of each girl and a 24×30 of all the girls together. This layout is great for a traditional feel with an updated look.

Family Portrait ClusterFor the Kimball family cluster, we wanted to highlight their three adorable boys. Can you just imagine raising three young boys? We wanted to protray a feeling of love and closeness, but also the fun and energy we know these young boys have. We used a 6×6 individual of each boy (running in the reflecting pool of course!), a 24×24 of the three boys together, and a 36×36 of the whole family. This configuration is great because you have a beautiful family portrait on the right, and TONS of personality on the left!

Family Portrait ClusterWe LOVE the Bimmerle family. Hank and Eli are die hard Texas Tradition fans. (and so are their parents)!  We used a 16×24 of each boy and a 20×24 of the whole family for thier wall cluster. This wall cluster will actually hang above the couch at Texas Tradition Photography!

Not sure what sizes you want for your portrait cluster? Take a picture of your space and measure, then bring it to your appointment. We’re always happy to help design custom portrait cluster for your home!

Proper Portrait Sizing – Tips from a Carrollton Professional Family Photographer

Since family portrait season is in full swing, we wanted to take the time to educate our clients on how to pick the best size for their wall portraits. Often our clients tell us they “don’t need anything big” for their walls, only to come back and need to upgrade their portrait size. Here are our tips for how to choose the right portrait size for your home!

DVD's are not portraits!

1. DVD’s are not portraits!
We love being able to offer digital collections to our clients, but the portraits rarely make it off the disk! By having Texas Tradition Photography print your wall portrait, you get amazing quality, choice of mounting or gallery wrap, and you won’t be able to resist hanging your portrait right away!

8x10's aren't big!

2. 8×10’s only seem big when you’re holding them.
Unless you have a wall with A TON of portraits hanging on it, your wall will look empty. 8×10’s are great for desks and wall clusters, but they don’t make great wall portraits.

16x20's are still too small

3. Not bad, but not great.
This 20×24 is starting to fill the space, but still isn’t making much of an impact, even with a wider frame.

30x40 Perfect!

4. Now this is what we’re talking about!
This portrait is a 30×40. It may sound HUGE, but the second it’s hung on the wall it looks perfect!

Not sure what size will work best on your walls? Grab a sheet of paper and hang it on your wall. If it looks too small, add another sheet until it looks right. Once it is the perfect size, measure it. Bring in your measurement and we can help you find the perfect wall portrait for you!

Still need guidance? Give us a call, we would love to help you decorate your home with beautiful portraits!

Helpful Tips for Creating Beautiful Family Portraits – Carrollton Photographer

1. Choosing proper clothing is a huge factor in how your portrait will look. For the best results, everyone should wear colors that coordinate. You don’t have to match, but you need to look like you go together. For example, if you choose for everyone to wear brown tones, you can have a mixture of light and dark brown.

2. Think of what style you prefer (and make sure you tell me). Do you prefer a more formal portrait, or a less posed more “action” style?

3. To help you make decisions on style and color of clothing, decide where your portrait will hang. This will also help you choose a size for your portrait.

4. Schedule your session for a time of day when all of your children are typically happy.

5. Pets are part of your family, please bring them.

6. Do you have extended family? This is a great opportunity for gift giving. Grandparents are especially hard to buy for and they ALWAYS love portraits of their kids and grand kids.

7. Keep your cool!! Getting your family dressed and to your session is the hardest part. But, it is worth it! You get your family here and I’ll do the rest.

8. Definitely choose Texas Tradition Photography for your 2013 Family Portrait Session. And definitely call today before we fill up on our special event days.

9. Send a friend and save money! Refer a new family to us and receive a $50 gift certificate when they book their family portrait session with us.

If it’s worth having, it’s worth working for…

Have you ever heard the saying “if it’s worth having, it’s worth working for.”  Well that’s what comes to mind this time of year as I photograph so many families.

Central Park Frisco Family Photography

When a mom calls me to schedule her family portrait session, we have to compare and cross reference work, sports, dance and social calendars of all the family members. By the time we have chosen a date and time that works for everyone, something comes up like a playoff game or a sick kid. Then we are scrambling to reschedule. Once that perfect date is established, it’s shopping time.  Everyone in the portrait must look their best from head to toe.  Often times this means going to several stores on several different days to secure the perfect attire.

This has already added up to be a timely investment.  Now, let’s talk about getting the entire family clean, dressed and to the portrait location on time AND in a good mood.  By this time, a lot of families just want to get it over with… this is where I take over.  I bring my years of experience dealing with all ages, personalities and family dynamices to come together and create an amazing family experience.  It’s not just a portrait session, although that is the ultimage goal.

By the end of our session, everyone is laughing and playing and having fun.  The session planner (usually the mom) hugs me and says she is glad it’s over.

…pause for effect… hopefully, you have chosen a great photographer because after all of this time, the portraits need to be BREATH-TAKING!!

Fast forward a week… we meet, usually with the whole family, to view and order the portraits and it hits mom hard… tears start to flow… and she thinks “if it’s worth having, it’s worth working for!”

The Sanchez Family 2012 – Carrollton Family Photography

Here are a few images from the Sanchez family portrait session.  We met at a beautiful greenbelt park in Carrollton. It was a hot day, but just perfect for this family portrait session. Andrea, the oldest daughter, was one of our 2013 senior models. We had an amazing time and I hope you enjoy their portraits as much as we do.
